not only by American Songwriter magazine, but also by the innovative performing rights organization SESAC, who bestowed that same honor on her seven times.
Margaret has a heart for nurturing young artists. Leading and guiding by acting as a mentor and record producer, she helps propel them toward creative excellence. It is, she has found, her life's mission to encourage and empower people and she lives from that gifting outward. In 2003, Margaret established her own music publishing company, Modernm.
An acclaimed author, Margaret has written three books--With New Eyes (Harvest House-1999), Growing Up Together (Harvest House-2000), and her latest, Coming Up for Air (Navpress-2006). She also writes a monthly column for CCM Magazine. In addition, Margaret has become a respected, in-demand keynote speaker and workshop facilitator. She has worked as a guest lecturer on the arts to the Gospel Music Association's Academy of Arts and serves on the boards of the Sparrow Foundation and of the East Nashville Center for the Creative Arts.
Margaret effectively uses her platform as an artist to help people understand their need for a deeper Christian faith, service and creativity. "A key element of what good art is to me is its ability to change people, to move them toward doing something they wouldn't normally do," she says. With this principle in mind, she inclines people to become more aware of their humanity, while at the same time, making them aware of universal matters such as the pandemic problem of AIDS and global poverty.
In October 2003, Margaret was selected as the first ever recipient of the prestigious Lumiere du Monde (light of the world) award. Bishop Whalon, who presented Becker with her award in Europe, is the Bishop in Charge of the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe. Whalon heralds Becker "as an artist who takes precedence with spirituality in her music ministry in spite of working in such a market-driven industry." MORE
